While Mansfield Park appears in some ways to continue where Pride and Prejudice left off, it is, as Kathryn Sutherland shows in her illuminating Introduction, a much darker work, which challenges 'the very values (of tradition, stability, retirement and faithfulness) it appears to endorse'.

A work that combines social commentary with the more private preoccupations of Jane Eyre, Shirley demonstrates the full range of Bront├ź's literary talent.
Charlotte Bront├ź imagined a new form of power, equal to that of men, in a confident young woman whose extraordinary freedom has accustomed her to think for herself....Shirley is Bront├ź's most feminist novel."

Alice's adventures in Wonderland / Lewis Carroll. - London : Penguin Popular Classics, [b.r.]. - 150, [2] strony : ilustracje ; 18 cm.
(Penguin Popular Classics)
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (commonly shortened to Alice in Wonderland) is an 1865 novel by English author Lewis Carroll (the pseudonym of Charles Dodgson). It tells of a young girl named Alice, who falls through a rabbit hole into a subterranean fantasy world populated by peculiar, anthropomorphic creatures. It is considered to be one of the best examples of the literary nonsense genre. The tale plays with logic, giving the story lasting popularity with adults as well as with children. One of the best-known and most popular works of English-language fiction, its narrative, structure, characters and imagery have been enormously influential in popular culture and literature, especially in the fantasy genre. The work has never been out of print, and has been translated into at least 97 languages.

Through the looking Glass / Lewis Carroll. - London : Penguin Popular Classics, [b.r.]. - 172, [1] strona : ilustracje ; 18 cm.
(Penguin Popular Classics)
Stanowi cz─Ö┼Ť─ç 2. powie┼Ťci: Alice's adventures in Wonderland.
Preceded byAlice's Adventures in Wonderland Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There (also known as Alice Through the Looking-Glass or simply Through the Looking-Glass) is a novel published on 27 December 1871 (though indicated as 1872)[1] by Lewis Carroll and the sequel to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865). Alice again enters a fantastical world, this time by climbing through a mirror into the world that she can see beyond it. There she finds that, just like a reflection, everything is reversed, including logic (for example, running helps you remain stationary, walking away from something brings you towards it, chessmen are alive, nursery rhyme characters exist, and so on).

While Geoffrey Chaucer composed several magnificent works of poetry, his reputation as ÔÇťthe father of English literatureÔÇŁ rests mainly on The Canterbury Tales, a group of stories told by assorted pilgrims en route to the shrine of Thomas ├á Becket in Canterbury Cathedral. From the mirthful and bawdy to the profoundly moral, the tales, taken in their entirety, reflect not only the manners and mores of medieval England, but indeed, the full comic and tragic dimensions of the human condition. Considered the greatest collection of narrative poems in English literature, The Canterbury Tales was composed in the Middle English of Chaucer's day, possibly to be read aloud at the court of Richard II. However, their grandeur, humor, and relevance are timeless, as readers of this authoritative edition will discover.

Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure, commonly known as Fanny Hill, has been shrouded in mystery and controversy since John Cleland completed it in 1749. The Bishop of London called the work 'an open insult upon Religion and good manners' and James Boswell referred to it as 'a most licentious and inflaming book'.The story of a prostitute's rise to respectability, it has been recognized more recently as a unique combination of parody, sensual entertainment and a philosophical concept of sexuality borrowed from French libertine novels. Modern readers will appreciate it not only as an important contribution to revolutionary thought in the Age of Enlightenment, but also as a thoroughly entertaining and important work of erotic fiction, deserving of a place in the history of the English novel beside Richardson, Fielding and Smollett.
