Meet Auberon Quin. He is a man to whom the world is a punchline; a dangerous man, for he cares for nothing but a joke. And meet Adam Wayne to whom the joke is quite serious. When Quin is appointed King of England, he decides to turn London into a medieval carnival for his own amusement. When Adam Wayne is appointed Provost of Notting Hill, he proposes to be patriotic about it and takes the new order of things seriously, organizing a Notting Hill army to fight invaders from other neighborhoods. Amidst the chaos of confusion, the stirring speeches, the epic battles, and the all-pervading Chesterton wit, The Napoleon of Notting Hill is a cry for renewed life in a deadened world a call that compels mankind to fight for the small things, if only for the sake of fighting for something.

This is a book to be read by a blazing fire on a winter's night, with the curtains drawn close and the doors securely locked. The unquiet souls of the dead, both as fictional creations and as 'real' apparitions, roam the pages of this haunting selection of ghost stories by Rex Collings.

'The horror! The horror!' - these are Kurtz's final words in Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, the story of a man who travels into the jungle to seek his fortune and who instead finds an all-consuming moral and spiritual wilderness. Conrad's enduring tale served as a touchstone for many works of fiction inspired by its somber theme.

Lord Jim / Joseph Conrad. - Hertfordshire : Wordsworth Editions Limited, 1994. - 261 stron ; 20 cm.
(Wordsworth Classics)
Na dole okładki: Complete and Unabridged.
I had been looking forward to reading "Lord Jim." I was excited to discover that Marlow the narrator returns ... and, upon reading the introduction, that Conrad was actually Polish. For years I thought the guy was British. Not only that, but "Lord Jim" is considered in some circles to be THE beginning of modernist literature, moving away from Victorian themes.
Lord Jim (1900) has been acclaimed as a modernist masterwork. Its narrative innovations and psychological complexity make it one of the most influential fictions written in the twentieth century and it has challenged and stimulated generations of readers as well as writers on and of fiction.

The book is a fictional autobiography of the title character, an English castaway who spends 28 years on a remote tropical island near Venezuela, encountering Native Americans, captives, and mutineers before being rescued. This device, presenting an account of supposedly factual events, is known as a "false document" and gives a realistic frame story.

Zawiera: Reminiscences of Sherlock Holmes ; The Valley of Fear Part I : The Tragedy of Birlstone, Part II The Scowrers ; His Last Bow.
The most famous introduction in the history of crime fiction takes place in Arthur Conan Doyle s A Study in Scarlet, bringing together Sherlock Holmes, the master of science detection, and John H. Watson, the great detective s faithful chronicler. This novel not only establishes the magic of the Holmes myth but also provides the reader with a dramatic adventure yarn which ranges from the foggy, gas-lit streets of London to the borning plains Utah.

The White Company / Arthur Conan Doyle. - Hertfordshire : Wordsworth Editions Limited, 1996. - 331,[1] strona : ilustracje ; 20 cm.
(Wordsworth Classics)
Na dole okładki : Complete and Unabridged.
The novel is relatively unknown today, though it was very popular up through the Second World War. In fact, Doyle himself regarded this and his other historical novels more highly than the Sherlock Holmes adventures for which he is mainly remembered. The "White Company" of the title is a free company of archers, led by one of the main characters. The name is taken from a real-life 14th-century Italian mercenary company, led by John Hawkwood.

Sigmund FreudÔÇÖs controversial ideas have penetrated Western culture more deeply than those of any other psychologist...Psychoanalysis was never just a method of treatment, rather a vision of the human condition which has continued to fascinate and provoke long after the death of its originator...

Keats's first volume of poems, published in 1817, demonstrated both his belief in the consummate power of poetry and his liberal views. While he was criticized by many for his politics, his immediate circle of friends and family immediately recognized his genius. In his short life he proved to be one of the greatest and most original thinkers of the second generation of Romantic poets, with such poems as 'Ode to a Nightingale', 'On First Looking into Chapman's Homer' and 'La Belle Dame sans Merci'. While his writing is illuminated by his exaltation of the imagination and abounds with sensuous descriptions of nature's beauty, it also explores profound philosophical questions.
